Despite 39-point explosion, Khat Bell focuses on fixing errors

Khat Bell believes that she could have done more after her explosive 39-point performance in Chery Tiggo’s thrilling victory over PLDT in the 2024 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference on Saturday.

Bell – who registered 33 attacks, five blocks, and an ace – etched her name in the PVL record books. She had the fifth-best scoring output in league history during their 25-19, 20-25, 25-20, 21-25, 15-10 win against the High Speed Hitters.

The American reinforcement, however, felt she could have exceeded her mark if not for several errors.

“Yeah, I should’ve done like 50. But like I said, those errors,” Bell said after the win, which allowed the Crossovers to tie Creamline and PLDT at the top of Pool A with identical 3-1 records.

“I mean, 39 points is alright, but I had a lot of errors tonight that I wish I wouldn’t have made. Obviously, the goal was to get three points tonight, and I’ll take two. But while 39 points is cool, I really don’t like the errors,” she added.

Chery Tiggo head coach Kungfu Reyes supported Bell’s claims, stating that the veteran player is capable of surpassing her current output.

Reyes also praised Bell for her stellar floor and net defense against PLDT.

“I think mas kaya pang ano… Khat can do more. She can do more. That’s normal with her. It’s just like, minsan kasi syempre naka-shuffle din ‘yung bola namin, kailangan namin pagtrabahuhin ‘yung locals,” said the seasoned tactician.

“Pero mostly talaga ng panggagalingan ng puntos namin eh ‘yung import. Khat is very reliable from floor defense, net defense, especially during attack. Too much power for her,” he added, as Bell also finished with 11 excellent receptions.

On the whole, Bell feels pleased to go home with the win and bounce back from their deflating loss to the Cool Smashers last Tuesday.

“I think I probably had 10, but I feel good. I’m glad we got the win tonight, and that’s a positive thing.”

But despite the bounce-back performance, the 31-year-old University of Texas product remains unsatisfied. She promised to use everything she has learned from this match to improve in the Crossovers’ future games.

“Obviously, it’s really important, and those aspects really matter tonight. We have to use the mistakes we made tonight to get better. 39 points is cool, and the win is even better, but we’re all looking forward to getting back to practice and just continuing to improve,” said Bell.

“We have a lot of things to talk about and clean up a bit. I think the further along we get, the better we’ll be. We don’t need to peak right now; there are still a lot of games left, so I’m looking forward to us making our way.”
