Chot Reyes faces crucial decision as Gilas await Scottie, Dwight prognosis

After an intense and productive training camp in Europe, Gilas Pilipinas find themselves at a crucial crossroads as the coaching staff grapples with important decisions regarding the team’s pool and preparation for the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup, scheduled for next month.

The camps in Estonia and Lithuania proved to be a mixed bag for Gilas, as injuries to key players Scottie Thompson and Dwight Ramos loom over the team’s future.

Thompson suffered a metacarpal fracture in his shooting hand during practice, and the extent of his recovery will be determined following consultations with a hand specialist in Manila.

Similarly, Ramos has been dealing with a knee injury, rendering him unable to participate in recent tune-up games.

Chot Reyes openly acknowledged that the fitness of Thompson and Ramos would heavily influence the decisions regarding the final pool selection.

“We have to take a look and get the official medical prognosis of Scottie’s injury and get an MRI on Dwight’s knee because these are very important decisions that we will have to make in Manila,” Reyes said on the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Facebook page.

Reyes had previously indicated that additional players could still be added to the pool during the team’s preparations for the World Cup.

Looking ahead, Gilas is set to engage in tune-up games against national teams in China.

Although the specific opponents were not disclosed by Reyes, he anticipates tougher challenges during the China series, as Gilas Pilipinas will once again go up against full national teams.

This opportunity will serve as a vital platform for the team’s growth, allowing them to incorporate the lessons learned during their European tour and further improve their game.

“I think that’s the most important thing as we continue to grow from the lessons that we learned here, to improve, and then prepare for tough games in our China series in which we are going to play a full national team again,” said Reyes.

While Gilas achieved three victories out of six tune-up games, the focus remains on the invaluable experience gained and the knowledge acquired, which will prove pivotal when the team takes on the high-stakes matches in the World Cup.

As the countdown to the tournament continues, Gilas Pilipinas stands poised to make strategic decisions that will shape the team’s composition and solidify their chances of securing a berth in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
