2023 FIBA World Cup

Gilas must embrace ‘start strong, finish strong’ mentality for WC success, says Chot

Chot Reyes is of the opinion that Gilas Pilipinas must adopt a “start strong, finish strong” mindset to overcome world-class teams in the upcoming FIBA World Cup.

In their final game at the 2023 Heyuan WUS International Basketball Tournament, Gilas couldn’t sustain its strong start, allowing Iran B to gain momentum going into the final quarter.

Well-timed three-pointers from B-League imports Kiefer Ravena, Dwight Ramos, and Bobby Ray Parks Jr. proved crucial for Gilas to survive against the second-tier Iran squad.

Facing Senegal in their second match of the tournament, Gilas entered the fourth quarter trailing by six, 47-53. However, late-game heroics from Parks – coupled with clutch three-point shots from Ravena and AJ Edu – secured a comeback victory against Senegal.

Despite these triumphs, the seasoned Gilas tactician emphasized that maintaining a strong start should also be complemented by a strong finish to prevent opponents from gaining advantageous momentum.

“It’s challenging because when things are going well and we let up a bit, we lose momentum, and it shifts to the other team. We can’t just switch on and off that seriousness,” said Reyes on the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Facebook page.

“Every second on the court counts, and there’s very little room for error. That’s the situation we’re in – one mistake and we’re done,” he added.

Reyes noted that finding a consistent way to sustain leads and momentum will put Gilas in its prime form and offer a “chance” to shine in the World Cup. However, he conceded that might not be sufficient, acknowledging the tough group-stage match-ups against Angola, Italy, and the Dominican Republic.

“Even if we give our best, it might not be enough, but for sure, if we don’t give our best, we have no chance.

“So, let’s give ourselves a chance. Let’s go out there and play our best because if we’re not at our best, we won’t stand a chance against these opponents,” Reyes stated.

As the men’s national basketball team moves forward, their focus shifts to tune-up games against Mexico and Montenegro in the final stages of World Cup preparations.

NBA Sixth Man of the Year Jordan Clarkson will join the team for practice starting on Wednesday. Kai Sotto is also expected to participate in training this week. (Ernest Martin Tuazon)
