After two seasons of knocking on the door of the Final Four, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde was destined for a breakthrough this year in Season 96.
However, the COVID-19 pandemic happened. And in the two years that passed, changes abounded in the system of the Blazers.
Then head coach TY Tang had to push through with his migration to Canada in September of 2021, months into the planned start of Season 97 – the current season hosted by CSB, leaving the position vacant.
However, his head deputy and fellow Xavier School product Charles Tiu was more than ready to step up.
And he eventually took on the post himself.
And after a sorry 67-63 loss to defending champion Letran on opening day, Tiu and the Blazers got their first taste of victory on Tuesday. They ran down Lyceum, 79-68.
“I’m happy that we won. But of course, I want to thank the Lord for giving us this win and this opportunity,” said Tiu, a young head coach that already has vast experience under his belt.
“I’d really like to thank the people who have been supportive of me. They’ve really helped make my transition to CSB as a head coach smooth despite the circumstances, especially Brother Dodo Fernandez and Sir Stephen Fernandez. Also grateful to Boss Raffy [Villavicencio], Boss Frank [Lao], and our other supporters who have been with us even behind the scenes.”
Part of the change is getting in talents to help augment the pool left from the two previous seasons.
Former UP Fighting Maroon Will Gozum finally broke out of his shell with 15 points, eight rebounds, and a block. Meanwhile, Ralph Nayve showed his wares with a game-high 17 points. He also had three assists, one steal, and one rebound.
However, Tiu knows that perhaps more than him, there is someone somewhere who is beaming with pride for the Blazers.
“I dedicate this win to Coach TY, who I know is still supporting and cheering for us even if he is in Canada right now.”
Definitely, Tang is smiling from the other side of the world.
One down, more to go.
