Carlos Yulo wrapped up his appearance in the 12th Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championships on a high note, clinching two bronze medals in the vault and parallel bars on Sunday at the Jecheon Gymnasium in South Korea.
Despite falling short of reclaiming the title in either event for the fourth straight championship, the two-time world champion delivered strong performances that helped the Philippines secure fifth place overall in the medal tally, with one gold, one silver, and three bronze medals.
Yulo opened the vault final with a solid 14.533 on his first attempt. However, a lower execution score of 8.933 on his second vault brought his average down to 14.133 — just below his qualification mark of 14.400 — earning him a third-place finish.
Iran’s Mahdi Olfati introduced a newly named skill on his first vault and secured the gold medal with an average score of 14.500. Meanwhile, China’s Huang Mingqi successfully appealed the score of his second vault, allowing him to edge past Yulo for the silver with a 14.400 average.
In the parallel bars final, Yulo attempted a modified routine that nearly cost him a podium spot, finishing with a score of 14.166. Japan’s Oka Shinnosuke and Tsunogai Tomoharu claimed gold and silver with scores of 14.700 and 14.466, respectively.
China’s Shi Cong, a two-time world medalist in the event, scored 13.900 — just shy of the podium. Yulo narrowly edged out Vietnam’s Dinh Phuong Thanh, who posted a 14.066, to secure his second bronze of the day.
Yulo’s campaign concluded with a seventh-place finish on the horizontal bar, scoring 12.000 points after missing a catch on a release move.
The Philippines’ lone silver medal came from Carlos’ younger brother, Eldrew Yulo, who competed in the junior vault final. The 16-year-old rising star settled for second place with an average of 13.850, just behind hometown favorite Bak Junwoo’s 13.933.
Meanwhile, Ivan Cruz also made the senior vault final, placing sixth with an average score of 14.150, registering 14.633 and 13.666 on his two attempts.
