As Team Lakay embraces its “next-gen” of mixed martial artists, the legendary camp will be introducing another blue-chip prospect at ONE Friday Fights 27 on August 4.
Carlo Bumina-ang is set to make his mark and carry on the legacy of the prominent La Trinidad, Benguet-based stable as he faces Iran’s Reza Saedi in the opening bantamweight contest of the live event.
Dubbed “The Bull” for his explosive striking and smothering ground game, Bumina-ang made his professional debut under the Team Lakay Championship banner in April 2019.
In that bout, he made quick work of Arniel Lomayno, finishing his compatriot in the first round by technical knockout.
Under the guidance of head coach Mark Sangiao and the rest of the group, Bumina-ang has rapidly evolved into a well-rounded competitor.
Most recently, Bumina-ang achieved a double gold medal feat at the 2023 Pan-Asian Gi & No Gi Jiu-Jitsu International Open organized by the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation of the Philippines.
The 29-year-old Baguio City native stood on top of the podium for the 73-kilogram No Gi bracket and then went on to claim the sought-after hardware in the No Gi absolute category.
Bumina-ang faces an opponent who needs no introduction to Team Lakay as Saedi was initially scheduled to take on Carlos Alvarez at ONE Friday Fights 25 last July 14. However, the Iranian pulled out of the matchup after missing his scheduled flight.
Alvarez ended up facing late replacement Sadegh Ghasemi, whom he submitted with a D’arce choke in the second round of their featherweight clash.
Saedi will now have the opportunity to somehow avenge Ghasemi’s heartbreaking loss to Alvarez by taking on the Filipino’s teammate.
The Iranian stalwart turned pro in February 2020, defeating fellow countryman Ali Khademi in a local mixed martial arts promotion named Pahlevan Championship.
ONE Friday Fights 27 is set to happen at the world-renowned Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
The same venue will also play host to Jhanlo Sangiao’s return to action as the 21-year-old phenom locks horns with Mongolian bruiser Enkh-Orgil Baatarkhuu in a bantamweight duel at ONE Fight Night 13 on the morning of August 5.
