Nxled paid tribute to May Luna’s late mother by wearing white ribbons in their emotional victory over sister squad Akari in the Premier Volleyball League Second All-Filipino Conference on Tuesday.
Luna’s mother passed away last Sunday, just two days before the Chameleons’ much-anticipated clash versus the Chargers.
“It’s for the mother of Ate May who just passed away the other day,” shared Camille Kal.
The former La Salle standout, who is set to fly to Davao later in the day to be with her family, delivered an inspired performance to lift Nxled to a 22-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-16 win over Akari at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Kal said that the rest of the team dedicated the win to Luna and her family.
“So, instead of going home, she decided to stay and play for this game [vs. Akari]. So, ayun. Kaya sobrang naging emotional din yung panalo namin kanina, it’s because of her,” said the former National University and University of the Philippines setter.
“It was very fulfilling. Other than wanting to win against our sister team, we had another motivation. And it was more of a spiritual and emotional type of motivation because it was special,” she added.
For her part, Kal played her best game of the conference and tossed 28 excellent sets to go along with eight big points to contribute to the victory.
Kal also deflected the credit to her teammates, who all did their part in getting the win for Luna.
“I just wanna play well for the team and I really just want to give my spikers the best set that I could. I worked for this for… every day. Like, I work for it so much. And I had a lot of hard times, so wala akong any other goal in mind but to make the job easier for my spikers,” said Kal.
“Before we start the game, we just told each other na we should fight with a clear mind and a positive motivation. Ayun lang siguro. I mean, it’s not just me who helped – it’s everyone’s work that made us win the game,” she added.
