Blackwater’s future is now looking bright.
The Bossing have signed Filipino-American guards Sedrick Barefield and DJ Mitchell to separate deals on Tuesday.
Barefield has received a two-year maximum contract with a player option for the second year, while Mitchell has signed to a one-year deal.
Blackwater owner Dioceldo Sy personally signed the contracts, with Barefield accompanied by Phenom Championship Clinic’s Anton Brodett and Nadine Jamal, and Mitchell with his agent, Marvin Espiritu.
Barefield, 27, arrived in the country on Sunday and met with Bossing head coach Jeffrey Cariaso at Ronac Art Center on Monday.
The player option for PBA Season 50 gives Barefield the opportunity to renegotiate his deal if he performs well in his rookie season.
Mitchell, meanwhile, will immediately join the Bossing after being cleared by his MPBL club, the Manila Stars.
“We feel like he gives us not just one step forward but two steps forward. That’s how good he is. We all know how challenging our league is,” said Cariaso about drafting Barefield, a former G Leaguer. “A lot of things have to happen. Our younger guys will have to step up, make the next level, and play at a higher standard.
“We feel like his arrival will boost what we are building. We are looking forward to having him,” Cariaso added.
With Barefield, Mitchell, and last year’s second overall pick Christian David, who came from the University of Utah, University of Hartford, and Butler University respectively, Blackwater now boasts a strong core of NCAA Division I talent.
