Batangas-NZ Bluefire begins WMPBL title defense against Caloocan

Defending champion Batangas-New Zealand Bluefire begins its title defense in the 2026 Women’s Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League, taking on newcomer Caloocan in a triple-header opener tonight at the Alonte Sports Arena.

The Valkyries aim to set the tone early in their title-retention bid, while the Lady Kankaloo face a daunting test right out of the gate as they make their debut against the league’s reigning champions in the 6 p.m. clash.

Biñan-Tatak Gel opens the playdate in the 2 p.m. curtain-raiser against RK Hoops-Quezon City 10ACT, before Akari and Queenpin Basketball collide in the 4 p.m. showdown.

But the spotlight will shift to the nightcap, where Batangas-New Zealand Bluefire looks to make an early statement against debuting Caloocan.

Reigning MVP Afril Bernardino will be out for the game as she is with Gilas Women competing in the 2026 FIBA 3×3 World Cup Qualifiers in Singapore.

Snow Peñaranda, Khate Castillo, and Pringle Fabruada are expected to lead the Valkyries against the Lady Kankaloo.

Meanwhile, Caloocan will lean on the veteran presence of Janine Pontejos, Kris Tolentino, and Rejoice Adlawan as it looks to overcome a steep challenge against the stacked Valkyries squad in its league debut.

The second game shapes up as an equally intriguing clash between Akari and Queenpin Basketball, with both squads boasting significant star power and depth—setting the stage for a high-level showdown expected to deliver intensity from start to finish.

Akari, which acquired the core of last year’s finalist Discovery-Rizal, will bank on its built-in chemistry and experience as it opens its campaign, with Allana Lim, Raiza Palmera-Dy, Camille Sambile, and Angel Anies spearheading the charge.

On the other side, Queenpin Basketball is far from lacking firepower, led by Stefanie Berberabe, Gabi Bade, Lee Sario, Hazelle Yam, and LJ Miranda—bringing a balanced mix of scoring, playmaking, and versatility.

In the opening game, RK Hoops-Quezon City 10ACT looks to open its campaign on a strong note in the tournament supported by Aktive.

RK Hoops will have to wait for Ferrer, as she is with Bernardino in Singapore.

Jeorge Panti and Stiff Larosa will look to carry the load in the meantime.

The Angels, meanwhile, aim to make an early impression behind a core led by Chack Cabinbin, Monique Del Carmen, Luisa San Juan, Ara Abaca, and Eka Soriano, banking on their inside-out presence and cohesion to start strong.

With all six teams set to open their campaigns in one packed playdate, early positioning and chemistry will immediately be put to the test, with no side afforded the luxury of easing into the long season.
