Hong Kong took momentary solo second in Pool B of the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup for Women after making quick work of Singapore, 25-14, 25-12, 25-12, on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila.
Hong Kong improved to 2-1 at second just behind the 3-0 Vietnam. The winner between Indonesia and Kazakhstan later today at 1 p.m. will tie Hong Kong’s record.
Only the top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout crossover semifinals.
Singapore was just within one in the third set, 9-10, when Hong Kong’s Wing Lam Chim trooped to the service line flipped the momentum to her side as they dropped 10 unanswered points including three aces for herself, 20-9.
“Actually, at the beginning of the game, we were so nervous, but our coach told us not to be. We played our normal game the entire time so we could win,” said Chim, who had 15 points on 10 attacks and five aces.
Opposite hitter Lam Shum top-scored for Hong Kong with 17 points, all of which came from spikes, while three players also scored five each in Wing Lam Pang, Ka Yi Fong, and Wing Ni Yim.
Hong Kong’s final assignment in the pool will be against the Kazakhs tomorrow at 1:00 PM.
The Singaporeans ended pool play at 0-4. They will face the bottom team in Pool A in the battle for ninth match.
Singapore, who missed Rachel Lau and Wen Qi Fu for the second straight game due to injuries, was led by Ethel Siow with nine points.
