Alas Pilipinas Girls opened their 22nd Princess Cup Southeast Asian Under-18 Women’s Volleyball Championship campaign with a booming 25-14, 25-6, 25-12 victory over Singapore on Saturday afternoon at the Nakhon Pathom Gymnasium in Thailand.
The Philippines moved to 1-0 in the six-team tournament, which also includes Thailand, Malaysia, Australia, and Indonesia.
After a strong opening frame, 25-14, Alas made an even more dominant effort in the second to take the fight out of the Singaporeans entirely.
Kimberly Rubin poured in eight points in the second set alone, while Lianne Penuliar, Avril Bron, and Harlyn Serneche also had their moments.
Ashley Macalinao then feasted at the start of the third period with five points on the Nationals’ 13-3 blast built on three blocks and two quick attacks.
Akeyla Bartolabac’s service ace, which caught Singapore looking as the ball dropped down the line, capped the match.
Up next for Alas will be Malaysia tomorrow at 12:30 PM (Manila time).
This tournament serves as preparation for the teams before the 15th Asian Women’s U18 Volleyball Championship, set for June 16 to 23 at the same venue.
