Angel Canino skips SEA V-League, focuses on DLSU duties

Angel Canino will not take part in Alas Pilipinas’ training camp in Osaka, Japan due to her commitment to De La Salle University.

The UAAP Season 85 Most Valuable Player will also miss the SEA V-League.

Canino, who played a pivotal role in the Philippines’ historic bronze finish at the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup earlier this year, will miss the two-week training camp, which serves as the team’s preparation for the SEA V-League next month.

“She has her duties with DLSU and we support her commitment there. Sure, we’d love if she could join the national team training camp, but it’s all good,” Alas Pilipinas head coach Jorge Souza de Brito told Tiebreaker Times.

The team, though, welcomed two new faces from Central Washington University, Tia Andaya and Hannah Stires.

Andaya is a 5-foot-9 playmaker who played two years for Gonzaga University before transferring to CWU, where she spent the last three years.

Stires, a 5-foot-5 defensive specialist, played the last four years with the Wildcats.

Chery Tiggo stars Jennifer Nierva and Eya Laure also rejoined the national team after missing the FIVB Challenger Cup.

Players who are part of the Japan training camp include Premier Volleyball League (PVL) stars Jia De Guzman, Sisi Rondina, Dawn Macandili-Catindig, Vanie Gandler, Jema Galanza, Faith Nisperos, Dell Palomata, Cherry Nunag, Fifi Sharma, and rookies Thea Gagate and Julia Coronel.

Fresh off winning the Shakey’s Super League National Invitational Tournament, National University’s Bella Belen, Alyssa Solomon, and Arah Panique also joined the trip.
