Two heavyweights are set for their PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup debuts as TNT and Ginebra headline Friday’s twinbill at the SMART Araneta Coliseum—with oddsmakers already drawing the battle lines.
The Tropang 5G open their title defense against Rain or Shine at 5:15 p.m., while Barangay Ginebra takes on guest team Macau at 7:30 p.m.
According to Casino Plus, TNT will enter the matchup as a -4.5 favorite against the Elasto Painters, with the game’s total points over/under set at 209.5. Bets can be made here: https://www.casinoplus.com.ph/home/inGame?name=Basketball&title=SportBet.
But much of the spotlight remains on the flagship MVP Group franchise as it unveils former NBA big man Bol Bol—arguably the most high-profile import in recent PBA history.
The 7-foot-3 center steps in for Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, who is still recovering from a torn Achilles he suffered during his EASL stint with Meralco. Expectations are sky-high, but both Bol and TNT are focused on building chemistry, starting with their opening assignment.
TNT also gets a major boost with the return of veteran star Jayson Castro, who is set to play his first game in over a year after recovering from a knee injury. His last appearance came in Game 2 of the Season 49 Commissioner’s Cup semifinals—ironically against Rain or Shine.
Also rejoining the squad is Justin Chua, marking his third stint with the franchise after a recent free agency pickup.
Standing in their way is a confident Rain or Shine side that opened its campaign with a 116-109 win over Macau. Import Jaylen Johnson powered that victory with 29 points and 24 rebounds, alongside key contributions from Adrian Nocum, Gian Mamuyac, and Jhonard Clarito.
Despite the challenge of facing a loaded TNT squad, head coach Yeng Guiao sees a potential edge.
“They’ve seen us play now, but at the same time, we look at it as an advantage for them to be playing their first game,” he said. “I’m sure there are going to be adjustments on their part also.”
Meanwhile, Ginebra enters the nightcap as an overwhelming favorite. Per Casino Plus, the Kings are pegged at -7.5 against Macau, with the over/under set at 199.5.
The Black Knights, currently 0-2, face a daunting task against the league’s most popular team, especially with a massive crowd expected at the Big Dome.
Ginebra, bannered by Justin Brownlee, looks to begin its redemption tour after falling short in the Season 50 Philippine Cup semifinals against eventual champion San Miguel Beer.
Coach Tim Cone is also set to showcase a reinforced frontcourt, highlighted by the return of Isaac Go after a lengthy 533-day recovery from knee and ankle injuries.
Macau, however, has shown flashes of competitiveness despite its record. Tony Mitchell leads the charge, supported by Phoenix Shackleford, Damian Chongqui, Jenning Leung, and Ramon Cao.
With star power, returning veterans, and high betting stakes all in play, Friday’s doubleheader promises a fiery opening salvo in the midseason conference.
