Up against one of the game’s most complete players, Alex Eala struggled to find her range and was thoroughly dominated by 13th seed Karolína Muchová, 6-0, 6-2, on Monday evening (Manila time) in the fourth round of the WTA 1000 Miami Open.
Muchová, a former French Open finalist who won the WTA 1000 Qatar Open just last February, entered the match with one of the highest winning percentages on tour in 2026. She showed exactly why she has been so difficult to beat this season.
Playing the opening match of the day at the Grandstand of Hard Rock Stadium, Muchová dictated the rallies early, keeping Eala out of rhythm for nearly the entire match.
The 29-year-old needed just 24 minutes to secure the opening set, delivering a bagel as Eala struggled to handle her variety.
There was no respite for the 20-year-old in the second set, as Muchová continued to apply pressure.
The Czech raced to a 4-0 lead, winning 10 straight games against a sluggish Eala.
The Filipina showed brief signs of life by holding serve in the fifth game to avoid a double bagel, but Muchová took two of the next three games to wrap up the match in just over an hour.
It was a disappointing loss for Eala, who had been hoping to replicate her breakthrough run in the same tournament the previous year.
In the 2025 edition, she stunned the field by defeating three Grand Slam champions en route to the semifinals.
She will take a few days off before shifting her focus to the clay-court season. Eala is next scheduled to compete in the WTA 500 Upper Austria Ladies Linz, which begins on April 6.
