Alex Eala faces tough test against Karolina Muchova in Miami Open fourth round

Alex Eala will need to bring her full arsenal as she vies for a spot in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open on Monday.

Standing across the net from the 31st-seeded Eala in the fourth round of the WTA 1000 event will be one of the most complete players on the women’s tour, 13th seed Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic.

The 29-year-old Muchova boasts one of the highest winning percentages on the WTA this season, with 14 wins and just 3 losses.

Her three defeats came against world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus in the semifinals of the Brisbane International, world No. 4 Coco Gauff of the United States in the fourth round of the Australian Open, and world No. 3 Iga Swiatek of Poland in the fourth round of Indian Wells.

Among the top players Muchova has defeated this season are world No. 2 and Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, and world No. 11 Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia.

Muchova is fresh off a title run last February, when she defeated world No. 9 Victoria Mboko of Canada in straight sets to claim the WTA 1000 Qatar Open crown.

This week in Miami, she has already prevailed over recent Philippine Open champion Camila Osorio of Colombia and Britain’s Katie Boulter.

Currently ranked 14th in the world, Muchova reached a career-high No. 8 in 2023 after making the finals of the French Open, where she fell in three close sets to Swiatek. She also reached the semifinals of the US Open.

Eala will have to stay on her toes against an opponent whose craftiness stretches players across the court and keeps them off balance.

Muchova is known for her powerful groundstrokes, which she mixes with lobs and drop shots. She also uses her sliced backhand to rush the net, where her solid volleys put pressure on opponents.

The antidote for the 20-year-old Eala could be her strong defense and ability to keep the ball in play — qualities that have been on full display this week in Miami.

Eala’s flat backhand, if sharp on Monday, could trouble Muchova and make her think twice about approaching the net.

While Muchova is undoubtedly skilled technically, she is not known for a single weapon that allows her to consistently rack up winners and score points.

That said, Eala will enter the match as an underdog against the more experienced Czech.

The winner will advance to the Round of Eight to face either Mboko or Russian teen star and world No. 10 Mirra Andreeva.
