Alex Cabagnot has officially decided to hang up his jersey, ending a remarkable 20-year career in professional basketball.
Converge announced on Monday that the nine-time PBA champion guard has retired at the age of 42, concluding a one-year stint with the FiberXers.
With his playing days behind him, Cabagnot will now focus on coaching, joining University of the East as an assistant to newly appointed Red Warriors head coach Chris Gavina, a longtime friend.
“Thank you, Cabaggie. You may be hanging up the jersey, but your legacy remains both in the Converge FiberXers and in the PBA. Thank you, Alex Cabagnot,” Converge said in a statement.
Cabagnot began his PBA journey in 2005, spending his first five years with Sta. Lucia, Coca-Cola, and Burger King.
In 2010, he was traded to San Miguel, where he became an integral part of the franchise—aside from a brief stint with GlobalPort.
Over the next seven years, he played a key role in the Beermen’s dominance, forming part of Leo Austria’s famed “Death Five” alongside Arwind Santos, June Mar Fajardo, Marcio Lassiter, and Chris Ross.
Together, they captured eight championships, with Cabagnot earning Finals MVP honors in the 2017 Commissioner’s Cup.
He was traded to Terrafirma in 2021 before stepping away from the team in 2023.
In the latter years of his career, Cabagnot also had a brief run with Goyang in the Korean Basketball League before returning to the PBA for one final season with Converge.
