After rookie heartbreak, Titing Manalili not eyeing UAAP move just yet

By: Miguel Caramoan

After a heartbreaking end to his rookie season, Jonathan Manalili faces big questions — and big opportunities.

The 21-year-old playmaker, one of the most sought-after talents by UAAP schools, is determined to turn disappointment into growth.

Manalili’s journey has always been marked by success.

Back with the Letran Squires in the NCAA juniors, he never lost in the finals, helping secure consecutive championships in Seasons 98 and 99.

But stepping up to the seniors’ level with the Knights, the stakes — and the challenges — were higher.

This season, Manalili led Letran to the finals for the first time in four years, shouldering the responsibilities of a rookie star.

Yet, the fairy tale ended abruptly as the San Beda Red Lions swept the Knights in the NCAA Season 101 Seniors Basketball Finals.

Despite the sweep, Manalili sees the season as a triumph of effort and growth, a stepping stone toward restoring Letran’s winning culture under longtime mentor Allen Ricardo.

“Kanina nga napag-usapan namin, sobrang proud si Coach Allen talaga sa amin. Kasi unang-una, need namin na mabigyan siya ng magandang laban kasi nga effort and sacrifice niya sa amin,” the 21-year-old Cebuano guard said.

“Gusto lang talaga namin bumawi sa kanya and magsukli. OK pero di OK, pero sabi niya naman na wala siyang regrets and wala kaming regrets, kaming lahat, kasi alam naman namin na ginawa naman namin yung lahat.”

Individually, Manalili’s rookie campaign was outstanding. He earned both the NCAA Season 101 Freshman and Rookie of the Year awards. Still, personal accolades could not erase the sting of falling short of the ultimate goal.

“Siyempre, unang-una, malungkot kasi di namin achieve what we wanted. Pero wala, ganoon talaga yung buhay. Minsan panalo, minsan talo. We just need to accept it and move forward kami sa parating next season, next year,” he reflected.

Rather than chasing immediate redemption, Manalili remains focused on learning from mistakes and preparing for what comes next.

“Hindi pa ako gigil bumawi siguro kasi nga hindi ganon yung way dapat eh. Panoorin ko ulit yung game, kung ano yung mali namin, mali ko. Para next time kung sino man yung makakatapat namin, alam na namin yung gagawin,” he said.

For now, his attention remains on Letran and personal growth. The thought of transferring to the UAAP or other schools isn’t on his mind.

“Wala muna sa isip ko yung lipat ng UAAP. Mag-relax muna ako and need ko bumangon muna bago isipin yung mga yan.”
