With a generational talent like Bulgaria’s Moni Nikolov, it’s no surprise that top NCAA volleyball programs came calling for the gifted setter.
But Nikolov knew early on that he wanted to test himself abroad and learn from the best.
It also helped that his older brother, Alex, had already paved the way in the U.S., chasing his own dreams far from their humble beginnings in Sofia.
Ultimately, the same school where Alex played — Long Beach State — became the perfect fit for Moni.
“Yes, it was my decision. I knew I could learn a lot in college, and the coaches there are great. I mean, they’re the best coaches in America that I’ve had. So, during my time there, I gained a lot of experience and improved significantly as a player,” said the now 18-year-old setter.
Always a team-first player, Nikolov came to the U.S. with a clear purpose: to help Long Beach State end its six-year championship drought in the 2025 NCAA season.
That mission was accomplished. Not only did the Beach reclaim the crown, but Nikolov was also named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player — an honor that underscored his exceptional leadership despite his young age.
“It feels great, and I humbly believe I deserve that award. I’m very happy to receive it. But the most special achievement is bringing the championship back to my team,” Nikolov said.
“Winning the Player of the Year award was surprising, but I’m more thrilled that we were able to win the whole thing.”
Reflecting on his season, Nikolov admitted the experience elevated his game in ways he never imagined, saying, “It helped a lot as I was exposed to different lifestyles and playing styles from another country. Additionally, being introduced to various techniques and cultures has definitely made me a better player.”
Now, Nikolov is ready for the next challenge — joining his brother Alex and the rest of the Bulgarian squad as they push forward into the Round of 16 at the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship.
