Despite being painfully cut from the final roster just days before the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 began, Chris Newsome is still making sure he contributes to the cause.
Newsome, who was among the final omissions from the 16-man pool, alongside Thirdy Ravena, Bobby Ray Parks Jr., and Calvin Oftana, reaffirmed his commitment to the Gilas program by joining the team courtside for their opening match against the Dominican Republic at the Philippine Arena.
The Meralco Bolts star assisted the team during their pre-game warm-ups and provided motivation from Gilas’ bench.
“I want to be among those 12. I want to be on the court, but given the circumstances, I have to find a way to support the team in any way I can. Whether that’s rebounding, assisting with warm-ups – that’s what I need to do,” Newsome said after the Philippines fell to the Dominicans, 81-87.
“This just demonstrates my 100 percent commitment to this program. I’ll do whatever the program and coaches require to ensure our success. I assist the guys in warming up, offer mental and vocal support, and share my observations,” he added.
Newsome’s reaction to his exclusion from the final roster underscores his unwavering dedication to the Gilas program, epitomizing the spirit of “bayanihan” in front of basketball enthusiasts worldwide.
“I believe the guys truly value that, and you know, I’m simply playing my part. To create something special, everyone needs to contribute, and the Filipino term for that is ‘bayanihan.’ Each person must do their role,” expressed the former Ateneo star.
“Even if I’m not on the court, I can still make small contributions, and I hope I demonstrated that tonight. I hope I conveyed that message to all the fans out there – that I’m still willing to do whatever it takes to support this team.”
