Team Laoag Power Smashers made easy work of Philippine Coast Guard Lady Dolphins in three sets, 25-8, 25-15, and 25-16, to start their 13th Shakey’s V-League Reinforced Conference stint on a winning note, Saturday evening at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
The newcomers for Team Laoag made wonders on offense in tonight’s win. Jorelle Singh led all scorers with 17 points, while 2016 Open Conference MVP Gretchel Soltones supplied 13. Both players scored off 13 attacks.
Chie Saet paced Team Laoag’s offense with 13 excellent sets and two points.
The Power Smashers quickly displayed their dominance against Coast Guard, cruising to a wide 16-5 lead in the opening set. With the Lady Dolphins drowning on numerous errors, Laoag took advantage of such and blew past Coast Guard, 25-8, to go up 1-0.
Laoag slowed down in the next set, allowing Coast Guard to control the early goings of the second set. However, the Power Smashers regained their bearings and took the upper hand, 17-12. From there, Laoag never looked back and coasted to a 2-0 set lead, 25-15.
Coast Guard went off to a good start once more in the third and last set, 8-6, but melted down again that paved the way for Laoag to snatch the lead, 16-13. The Lady Dolphins failed to come back, as Laoag ended the set with a 9-3 run to reign victorious in the match, 25-16.
“Happy syempre. Kumbaga may puhunan na kami,” said Laoag head coach Nes Pamilar regarding tonight’s victory. “Sana magtuloy-tuloy yung magandang performance.”
No one from the Coast Guard side scored in double figures. Hazel Mea led the team with just six markers.
Laoag (1-0) will have their hands full in their next match in facing Bureau of Customs Transformers on Wednesday, October 5, at 6PM.
