Argos Alingalan was left searching for words after the University of Santo Tomas suffered a crushing, anticlimactic end to its UAAP Season 88 High School Boys’ Football Tournament campaign last Friday.
For much of the championship match, UST appeared destined to retain the crown. Holding a one-goal lead through Roy Panunciar Jr.’s 44th-minute opener, the Junior Golden Booters ultimately collapsed late in the game.
Conceding back-to-back late strikes from the Far Eastern University-Diliman duo of Sambher Abrenica (85’) and James Maxdel Torres (90+3’), the Junior Golden Booters watched as the Baby Tamaraws completed their redemption arc and secured a record 13th division title.
The contrast at the UP Diliman Football Stadium was stark after the final whistle.
One half of the pitch saw the Baby Tamaraws and their supporters erupt in celebration after clinching their second championship in three years. On the other hand, the UST faithful stood in somber silence, lamenting a title defense that slipped away just as the finish line came into view.
“Kulang talaga kami sa fitness,” said a disappointed Alingalan after the match.
“This week, kulang kami sa disiplina and yun yung napansin ko sa team.”
As painful as the result was for UST, it is a reality the team must accept—particularly for graduating seniors like Alingalan.
Once the sting of defeat fades and emotions settle, they will realize that navigating an expanded field to reach a third consecutive finals appearance is a feat that should not be overlooked.
Setbacks are an inherent part of any student-athlete’s journey, and this experience serves as a vital catalyst for growth for this generation of Junior Golden Booters.
“I’m happy pa rin kasi nakita ko sa teammates ko na nag-effort sila and wala namang may gusto sa nangyari,” said the standout from Tagum, Davao.
“Siguro may plano ang Panginoon para sa amin this season.”
Beyond the silver medal, Alingalan’s individual brilliance was rewarded with a pair of prestigious honors. Having scored nine goals in the division, he secured both the Golden Boot and Best Striker awards.
As he transitions to the next phase of his career, Alingalan remains deeply appreciative of the foundation UST provided. While his next destination is still undetermined, his immediate focus is one of gratitude for the unwavering support of his brothers in the yellow and gold.
“First of all, hindi ko yun makukuha without God and my teammates,” he said.
“I’m still thankful for my teammates, kasi tinulungan nila ako from the first game hanggang final.”
