Alex Eala’s comeback bid falls short against Ostapenko in Linz

Alex Eala is no longer Jelena Ostapenko’s kryptonite.

The unseeded Eala twice squandered big leads and fell to the 4th-seeded Latvian, 7-5, 6-4, on Wednesday in the Round of 16 at the 2026 Upper Austria Ladies Linz.

Playing for the second consecutive time at the indoor Center Court of the Design Center Linz in Austria, Eala found herself on the ropes after losing a 4-2 lead in the opening set.

Former French Open champion Ostapenko showed resilience, sweeping the next four games and overpowering Eala in their exchanges to capture the first set.

Eala and Ostapenko employed contrasting approaches in their pursuit of victory.

The 20-year-old Eala extended rallies to force errors from her opponent, while the 28-year-old Ostapenko shortened points, going for big winners.

Early in the second set, Eala’s tactic paid off, as she raced to a 5-1 advantage.

Just when it seemed the Filipina was on the brink of forcing a decider, Ostapenko raised her level, leaving Eala scrambling for scraps.

Despite committing a double-digit number of double faults and unforced errors, Ostapenko seized control of the rallies, systematically dismantling Eala’s trademark defensive game.

Eala’s inability to string together winners allowed Ostapenko to gradually chip away at the lead and eventually shut out the rest of the match.

Ostapenko now advances to the quarterfinals to face Elena Ruse of Romania.

Eala, meanwhile, will return to the drawing board before seeking another shot at clay-court glory next week at the WTA 500 Stuttgart in Germany.
