UP’s 5-0 victory takes the fight to the still winless FEU

UP would nab their 2nd win of the tournament by defeating the hapless FEU squad 5 – 0.

 

Men’s Singles 1: Ethan Joshua Malelang (UP) def. Josh Mark Maquelabit (FEU) 2:0

UP 1 – FEU 0

 

Maquelabit would start out strong, scoring 5 successive points. Malelang would fight back, slowly chipping away at the lead, and finally bringing the deficit down to 1, 16 – 17. Malelang would then go on to score 5 straight points to complete the comeback and take the win, 21 – 17. For the 2nd set, it was Malelangs turn to take the early lead, as he would knock 6 consecutive points for his team. Malelang would not let up on the pressure as he would increase the lead to11 at 18 – 7. Maquelabit would try to fight back, scoring 3 consecutive points, but it was futile as Malelang would go on to win, 21 – 11.

Men’s Singles 2: Wilson Joseph Lopez (UP) def. Rafael Nicholas Dionisio Jr (FEU) 2:0

UP 2 – FEU 0

 

Lopez would dominate the 1st set early on, taking a quick 9 – 2 lead over his opponent. The lead would balloon to 12 at the 19 – 7 mark, and he would eventually take the victory, 21 – 8. The 2nd set started out close, with both teams trading points. Dionisio would be able to take a 2 point lead by scoring 3 straight points while down 8 – 7 to get the score up to 8 – 10. Lopez, however, would bombard his opponent by outscoring him 8 – 2, which would help him secure the lead. Lopez would go on to win, 21 – 15.

Men’s Doubles 1: Carl Kristian Clemente and Joaquin Raphael Deato (UP) def. Rafael Nicholas Dionisio Jr and Joel Christian Mendez (FEU) 2:1

UP took the lead early on by outscoring their opponents, 6 – 1. However, FEU would retake the lead by going on an 8 – 2 run. Both sides would hold their grounds, as neither would be able to get a significant advantage over the other. Up 1, UP would score 3 successive points, giving them a big enough cushion to close the set with a victory, 21 – 17. The 2nd set saw FEU take a quick early lead by going up 6 – 3. UP would fight back and tie the game at 9, and just like the previous set, it would be unclear who would be at an advantage as both teams would trade points once again. Down 2 at 17 – 20, UP would give a last attempt at salvaging the set by scoring 2 straight points, unfortunately FEU would take the 1 point they needed to secure the win, 19 – 21. The 3rd set started well for FEU as they posted a 3 -5 lead over UP, but 4 straight points form Deato gave UP the lead that they would not relinquish. With the score at 14 – 11, Clemente would give his team a comfortable cushion by scoring 4 consecutive points to put them up, 18 – 11. They would eventually win, 21 – 13.

UP lead early on, 6 – 4. They would then proceed to out score their opponents, 10 – 2. This would prove insurmountable for the FEU squad, as they would lose, 21 – 10. The 2nd set did not go any better for FEU, as they dug themselves into a 10 – 4 deficit early on. They would bring the lead down to 4 at 11 – 7, but 4 consecutive points from Cuden would cut their run short. Down 17 – 8, FEU would mount one last comeback attempt by scoring 4 straight points, but it would be unsuccessful as UP would go on to win, 21 – 13.

Men’s Singles 3: Lorenzo Miguel Leonardo (UP) def. Vince Vaslee Lagnada (FEU) 2:0

UP 5 – FEU 0 (UP wins)

Leonardo would jump ahead early with a 5 – 1 run that would quickly balloon to a 14 – 4 lead. With the score at 15 – 8, Leonardo would score 6 straight points to take the win, 21 – 8. The 2nd set was just like the 1st, with Leonardo taking an early 14 – 3 lead. Lagnada would find it difficult to get any points as he would eventually fall, outclassed by his opponent, 42 – 9.

 

Aggregate score: Leonardo 42 – Lagnada 17
