Alex Eala shows fight but falls to world No. 2 Elena Rybakina in Italian Open

Too strong. Too crafty. Too good.

Alex Eala produced some of her sharpest tennis of the season, but it was still not enough as she fell to world No. 2 Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, 6-4, 6-3, in the third round of the WTA 1000 Italian Open at Foro Italico on Sunday.

Rybakina has been in blistering form this season, highlighted by a title run at the Australian Open in January and a WTA 500 triumph in Stuttgart in April.

She has also compiled an impressive 81.8% win rate, the third-best on the tour, underscoring her consistency at the highest level.

That quality was on full display against Eala, who battled hard but could not match the former Wimbledon champion’s firepower and precision.

The opening set was a high-quality exchange between two aggressive shot-makers.

Eala fired 13 winners — her highest in a single set this season — while Rybakina was even more clinical with 17.

The difference came in the third game, where Rybakina secured the lone break of the set, enough to edge a tightly contested opener in 52 minutes.

Rybakina struck early again in the second set, breaking Eala in the opening game to seize momentum.

But the world No. 42 from the Philippines responded immediately, breaking back in the next game to level at 1-1 and even briefly take a 2-1 lead.

The Kazakh star, however, quickly reasserted control, winning three straight games to move ahead 4-2.

Eala showed one final burst of resistance, holding serve to close the gap at 4-3, but Rybakina closed out the match in composed fashion by taking the next two games, sealing victory in one hour and 33 minutes.

The Russian-born powerhouse once again showcased one of the most formidable serves in the women’s game, firing six aces compared to Eala’s one.

Eala now turns her attention to her next assignment, with a week to regroup before reportedly competing in the WTA 500 Internationaux de Strasbourg in France from May 17 to 23, which will serve as her final tune-up ahead of the French Open.
