Yuji Nishida eager to impress in friendlies vs Alas Men for next year’s FIVB Worlds

Yuji Nishida is eagerly anticipating his match-up against Alas Pilipinas Men as the Osaka Bluteon prepares for the 2024-25 season of the V.League.

Nishida is returning to the Philippines after playing for Ryujin Nippon in the Volleyball Nations League last June. And he feels excited to showcase his skills for the passionate Filipino fans during the two-day friendlies.

“Now it’s already a little bit tiring because we just finished practice and came back here, but I’m so happy to join these friendlies,” said the 24-year-old opposite spiker at the Alas Pilipinas Invitationals press conference.

The former JTEKT Stings standout also hopes to be selected for the Japan squad that will compete in the 2025 FIVB World Championship, which Japan will host.

“I hope to bring more energy to the fans and prepare for the Japan V.League. Nice to meet you, [Philippine] national team. I hope to be chosen to play for the national team next year [for the World Championship]. I’m looking forward to the game [tomorrow],” Nishida added.

Osaka head coach Laurent Tillie also expressed he feels honored to be part of such a prestigious event, which will serve as the Philippines’ kickoff event for the world championship.

“It’s a great honor for us to be here. It’s always a special moment every time we play a friendly game almost a year before the World Championship here in the Philippines,” Tillie said.

“I hope you will enjoy the matches tomorrow and the day after, and that you will prepare the best for the World Championship.”

Nishida and the Osaka Bluteon will face Kim Malabunga-led Alas Pilipinas on September 7 and 8, with both matches scheduled for 6:00 PM at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
