What Jenelyn Olsim learned from Grand Prix semis loss

Jenelyn Olsim may have fallen short in the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix, but she’ll show what she learned from that loss in her return to the ONE Championship Circle.

The Filipina rising star takes on Brazilian dynamo Julie Mezabarba in a three-round atomweight MMA bout at ONE 158: Tawanchai vs. Larsen tonight at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Olsim, who lost to Ritu “The Indian Tigress” Phogat in the semifinals of the aforementioned tournament, stated that they’ve been reviewing her loss and fixed one glaring hole in her game.

“Coach Mark [Sangiao] has been adamant in saying that I have to build my confidence. I think that’s true. I have to be more composed for my next fight. I have to be confident wherever the match goes,” Olsim said.

“For example, I have to be confident when it comes to wrestling. I don’t have to be tense or pressured, so when I get to that point, I know what to do.”

Even in her decision win over Bi Nguyen, Olsim had a lot of opportunities where she could’ve pulled the trigger and ended the match early.

Being gun shy is something that Olsim can’t afford to do against Mezabarba, and she promises to pull out all stops and get the finish, wherever the match goes.

“Like my coaches always say, work to finish. I want to finish this fight. I just have to follow my game plan and the finish will come,” Olsim said.

“I have to feel it out a bit, see what Julie brings to the table. If I can take her in striking, I’ll do it. If I can knock her out, I’ll do it. If I can’t, then I’ll bring her to the ground.”

Watch ONE 158: Tawanchai vs. Larsen beginning with the lead card on One Sports or One Sports+ at 5:30 p.m. Philippine Standard Time (PHT) on Friday, 3 June. The main card will broadcast live on One Sports and One Sports+ at 8:30 p.m. PHT.
