Wello Lingolingo suspended three games for ‘unsportsmanlike foul’

After a careful review, the UAAP Basketball Commissioner’s Office has issued a three-game suspension to University of the East guard Wello Lingolingo.

The sanction stems from an incident during the Red Warriors’ game against the De La Salle University Green Archers on Wednesday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

The suspension was handed down for an unsportsmanlike foul that occurred at the 4:21 mark of the fourth quarter. While the referees had already called for a jump ball, Lingolingo dove for possession and landed on the right knee of La Salle’s Kean Baclaan.

“Upon review, it was determined that the foul involved excessive and forceful contact made by a player in an attempt to play the ball or an opponent,” read the statement from basketball commissioner Jai Reyes.

Lingolingo was disqualified from the game after the foul was classified as a Criteria 2, finishing the contest with 24 points, seven assists, and three rebounds.

The Red Warriors ultimately lost in overtime, 111-110.

He will serve his suspension starting Sunday, October 19, during UE’s matchup against the Far Eastern University Tamaraws at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.

The suspension will also apply to the first two games of the second round.

UE still has the option to file a motion for reconsideration regarding the suspension.

Lingolingo is currently averaging 14.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game.

Earlier in the day, Baclaan’s MRI showed that he suffered a torn MCL.
