UWW: Fierre Afan takes two golds in grappling world championships

Fierre Afan is consistently building his reputation, progressing from one overseas tournament to another. This time, he secured his inaugural title as a world grappling champion.

Just three months after his triumph at the United World Grappling Asian Championships, where he earned two gold medals in June in Astana, Kazakhstan, the 19-year-old grappler from Marikina City once again displayed his dominance.

He clinched victory at the 2023 World Grappling Championships last Tuesday in Warsaw, Poland.

Representing the Philippines for the third consecutive time, Afan showcased his formidable strength in the -71 kg GP Gi men’s division final. He defeated French athlete Ethan Sebastian Forrez with a score of 15-2, securing his first world champion gold medal.

Reflecting on his victory, Afan said, “It was a challenging journey, but I overcame it and the victory is incredibly rewarding. The competition featured strong, agile, versatile, and intelligent opponents. Consequently, I strategized wisely, allowing me to outsmart all my competitors.”

He commenced his journey by triumphing over 20-year-old Pole Eryk Marcin Szychowski with a score of 10-3 in his first match. In the semifinal round, he defeated Alau Sakenuly of Kazakhstan with a score of 4-2.

Lucas Aguilar, the son of Alvin Aguilar, President of the Wrestling Association of the Philippines (WAP), secured two bronze medals in the 63 kg U-17 grappling gi and no-gi classes.

Alongside Afan and Lucas Aguilar, other Filipino grapplers, supported by the Philippine Amusements Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), participated in the championship. These athletes include Aisa Ratcliff, Lucho Aguilar, Joko Silverio, and Annie Parungao.

Afan received coaching from Alvin Aguilar and Michael Tabamo, with Lester del Rosario serving as the international referee during the weeklong competitions.

“Afan has undoubtedly demonstrated his readiness for greater challenges time and time again,” remarked Aguilar, also the founder of DEFTAC. “I eagerly anticipate Afan’s future endeavors and am thrilled to witness his performance in the World Combat Games.”
