UCAL back-to-back within reach for Olusesi-powered CEU downs Diliman in Game 1

Centro Escolar University relied heavily on Abdul-Wahab Olusesi’s stellar performance and defeated Diliman College, 80-73, to move closer to securing a second consecutive championship in the Universities and Colleges Athletic League-PG Flex Linoleum Season 6 on Saturday at the Paco Arena in Manila.

The 6-foot-10 player from Nigeria contributed 22 points and 19 rebounds, aiding the Scorpions in clinching the opening game of their best-of-three title series, which was also presented by Angel’s Pizza.

A victory on Monday would mark CEU as the first school to claim the title three times since the league’s inception eight years ago – a feat the Scorpions have achieved before.

However, the win didn’t come easily.

The top-seeded Scorpions had to overcome a slow start before taking control of the game in the second quarter. Olusesi dominated the paint, while Daniel Marcelo, Franz Ray Diaz, and Dylan Darbin provided crucial firepower.

CEU’s balanced offensive strategy countered Axl Ross Taporco’s 33-point outburst. He showcased his offensive prowess with 8 three-pointers, the most by any player this season.

His sharpshooting impressed several scouts in attendance, captivating the audience.

Marcelo, coming off the bench, contributed 24 points, while Diaz added 14 points along with 5 rebounds and 3 assists.

Darbin chipped in 11 points.

A surprise three-pointer from Mark Anthony Anagbogu proved to be the catalyst the Scorpions needed. That ignited a decisive run that gradually extended their lead to 13 points, 37-24.

The Blue Dragons – who had previously defeated the Scorpions 86-73 in the eliminations – regained their composure and narrowed the gap to 76-70 with a Taporco three-pointer.

However, a powerful inside play by Olusesi sealed Diliman’s fate, with the final score at 78-70 and only 36 ticks left on the clock.
