Far Eastern University dominated University of the East, securing a 4-0 victory to notch its second consecutive win in the UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Men’s Football Tournament on Thursday at the UP Diliman Football Stadium.
With this win, the Tamaraws climbed to six points in the standings, bolstered by an impressive performance from rookie sensation Edgar Aban Jr. and a clean sheet from goalkeeper Allan Diansuy.
“It is important to win; it is important to have good results,” said FEU’s Spanish coach, Roman Oliver.
“To be honest, today we had some problems. I don’t know if it’s because of the rain; I don’t know why. In the end, we found a solution. We found a way to attack. We are happy,” he added.
“Six points in two matches – so perfect start.”
A 19-year-old native of Masbate and a product of the esteemed FEU-Diliman high school program, Aban was outstanding, increasing his goal tally to four.
In the first half, played under light showers, Aban opened the scoring with a curling shot over UE’s goalkeeper Mark Maghinay in the 25th minute.
He then doubled the lead just before halftime, finding the net again in the 43rd minute.
Aban had previously netted a brace in FEU’s season-opening 3-0 victory over Adamson University.
Karl Absalon added to the scoreline in the 70th minute with a goal on a counterattack, extending the Tamaraws’ advantage to 3-0.
Selwyn Mamon capped off the scoring with a glancing header in the 87th minute, sealing the match for FEU.
With this loss, the Red Warriors remain at four points in the table.
FEU, last season’s runner-up, will face Ateneo de Manila University on Sunday. On the other hand, UE will take on Adamson on the same day. (JT)
