2025 FIVB World Men’s Championship

Tunisia cruises past Egypt to reach Men’s World Championship Round of 16

Tunisia secured a spot in the Round of 16 of the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship with a commanding victory over reigning African champions Egypt, 25-19, 25-18, 25-22, on Thursday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The Tunisians finished Pool A with a 2-1 record. Moreover, thanks to a superior set ratio over the two other teams — Philippines and Iran — who will battle for the remaining knockout-stage spot, they also clinched the top seed in their group.

Tunisia, making its second consecutive Round of 16 appearance, will face the second seed from Pool H. That could be Serbia, Brazil, or Czechia, depending on the outcome of tonight’s match between Czechia and China.

“From the start of this World Championship, we knew that the match against Egypt would be decisive. We prepared well and executed our serves and attacks very well,” said outside hitter Oussama Ben Romdhane.

“Clinching the top seed is very good for us. We don’t yet know if we will face Serbia, Brazil, or Czechia, but we will prepare and aim to play a strong match to advance to the next round,” he added.

The trio of Elyes Karamosli, Ben Romdhane, and Ali Bongui spearheaded Tunisia’s attack, making them the last African team standing in the tournament.

Karamosli converted 14 of his 26 spike attempts for 14 points, while Ben Romdhane also contributed 14 points through eight attacks, four aces, and two blocks. Bongui added 13 points as Tunisia jumped seven places in the FIVB rankings, moving from 40th to 33rd.
