Terrence Romeo opens door to playing abroad but PBA remains his heart

Staying in the Philippine Basketball Association remains the top priority of Terrence Romeo even as offers from overseas have been coming his way.

The league’s former three-time scoring champion would prefer to be at home than anywhere else, even though the idea of playing abroad is enticing.

“Priority ko talaga, gusto ko muna mag-try dito sa atin, sa PBA,” he said. “Gusto ko mag-try na kumausap, kung merong interested, kung magkakasundo.”

Romeo said as much on Sunday, moments after being unveiled as the first ambassador of new online casino platform ABCVIP in Timog, Quezon City.

It’s his latest venture while he continues to recover from a knee injury, the reason why Terrafirma has been missing his services in the ongoing Season 49 Philippine Cup.

As of writing, the club is already out of contention.

The Dyip only have two games left in their calendar, but the star guard is no longer keen on suiting up against either Rain or Shine or Blackwater.

Presumably, he’d be back in action by next season, although that depends on whether or not it would be with the team that got him via trade last November.

The 33-year-old said that he’s about to become a free agent when his current deal expires in August, thus his openness to explore all possible options.

That, of course, includes playing abroad, which, if he does, would make him the latest addition to a growing list of Filipinos signed as Asian imports.

“Meron talagang offer overseas,” said Romeo, who entered the PBA as the no. 5 pick by GlobalPort in 2013. “Wala munang exact kung saan. Pero meron.”

But that is only a last resort for him, as he would rather continue his career in Asia’s pioneering pro league.

“Kailangan mo lang naman tao na magtitiwala sa’yo,” said the three-time champion. “Nagtitiwala sa capability mo sa kakayahan mo. Ganun lang.”

And if ever worst comes to worst, Romeo by no means would stop looking for his next stop, for he believes that he still has a ton of basketball left.

“Kung wala talaga, wala tayong magagawa kung wala talaga. Kailangan mo talaga humanap ng way saan ako pwede maglaro,” the former UAAP MVP said. “Kasi gusto ko pa maglaro eh. Masyado pa maaga for me na mag-stop.”
