SOURCES: Exodus in San Sebastian

There’s an exodus going on in Recto

It all started with Renzo Navarro, together with Jerwyn Guinto, leaving San Sebastian College-Recoletos for Lyceum of the Philippines University. Now, almost half of last year’s Golden Stags have left San Sebastian, according to multiple sources closely monitoring the situation.

During the 2018 Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup presented by Chooks-to-Go, San Sebastian head coach Egay Macaraya has been fielding a team that did not include the likes of Jayson David, Alfren Gayosa, Alvin Baetiong, and Justine Mercado. It was thought that the student-athletes were resting, as the majority of them had joined the D-League for the Che’Lu-San Sebastian Revellers’ PBA D-League campaign.

However, Tiebreaker Times’ sources have confirmed that they have left San Sebastian altogether.

Though they did not divulge the reason for the student-athletes’ departures, they have confirmed the possible destinations of those who left.

Jayson David, a 6-foot-2 swingman, is said to be joining Navarro in Lyceum. He still has two years remaining if he decides to transfer there. He averaged 8.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.5 steals per contest during the NCAA Season 93 Seniors Basketball tournament.

Alfren Gayosa, who one of the sources said is nursing an injury, will be transferring to Arellano University. The 22-year-old posted norms of 6.1 points and 4.5 rebounds last year.

Mark Sangalang, who was in San Sebastian’s Team B last year, has moved to Colegio de San Juan de Letran. He stands at 6-foot-4 and plays the forward position.

Six-foot-four big man Justine Mercado, on the other hand, is heading in a different direction. Instead of transferring to another school, he has decided to forego his final year to play in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League.

It is still unknown where Alvin Baetiong will transfer.

Tiebreaker Times tried to reach out to incoming third-year Golden Stags head coach Egay Macaraya for comment but he has yet to respond regarding the matter as of publishing.
