Another player from the Philippine Women’s National Football Team has landed a professional contract with a top club abroad.
Sofia Harrison, one of the Filipinas’ main defenders, signed a contract with Frauen-Bundesliga side SV Werder Bremen Frauen on Thursday.
“We wanted to add a left-footed player to our squad in the full-back position so that we can always react to all situations that can arise during a season. We are therefore glad that we were able to sign a player with potential in Sofia,” stated the translated comments of club official Birte Brueggemann.
“Our squad planning is now complete.”
The modern version of Werder Bremen was established 15 years ago. It first gained promotion to the Frauen-Bundesliga — Germany’s top-flight professional league for women’s football — during the 2014-2015 season thanks to a second-place finish in the 2. Frauen-Bundesliga.
After relegation to the 2. Frauen-Bundesliga in the 2018-2019 season, the club bounced back to the Frauen-Bundesliga thanks to winning the championship in the aforementioned second division.
Werder Bremen finished in ninth place last season in the Frauen-Bundesliga with 18 points behind four wins, six draws, and 12 defeats.
For her part, Harrison is excited about what lies ahead, “Having the opportunity to play in the women’s Bundesliga is a big step for me. I hope that I can help the team with my skills to achieve our goals.”
The 23-year-old left-back is the latest player after the likes of Quinley Quezada, Sarina Bolden, and Jaclyn Sawicki to sign with a club abroad.
In her stint with the national team, she helped the country book a ticket to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup through a semifinals finish in the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup; clinched a bronze medal in the 31st Southeast Asian Games; and won the 2022 AFF Women’s Championship on home soil.
