Slumping early in final year, Jolo Manansala refocuses on strengths for NU

By: George Torno

Jolo Manansala was not having an ideal senior year, but he finally broke out of his slump as the tail end of his National University career approaches.

The 6-foot-4 forward delivered a timely performance, helping the Bulldogs secure a 70–64 victory over Far Eastern University and tighten their grip on a league-leading, 10–2 record in UAAP Season 88.

Manansala finished with eight points, nine rebounds, and a steal, bouncing back from a season marked by modest averages of 6.0 points on 34.04% shooting from the field, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists.

“Lagi ko na lang iniisip yung sinasabi ni coach na maglaro sa strength ko, kasi yung ibang games ko nga parang hindi ako yung naglalaro eh,” Manansala said with a smile.

“Kumbaga may mga gusto akong gawin na di naman sang-ayon sa systema. And kahit papaano, ngayon napakita ko ulit yung strength ko which is kahit papaano nakatulong ako sa rebounds and sa defense.”

Bulldogs head coach Jeff Napa also lauded Manansala’s timely contribution, pointing out that his graduating forward stepped up when the team needed it most.

Yet, Napa was quick to remind that there is always room for improvement, a mindset he instills in all his players.

“Actually alam naman nila na never akong nasa-satisfy sa mga performance nila so yun yung lagi kong ine-emphasize, na i-level up yung game [nila]. We’re thankful sa team, Jolo stepped up today pero malayo pa,” Napa said.

Manansala, meanwhile, credited the NU crowd for fueling his energy and lifting the team’s morale throughout the game.

“Grateful kami kasi nanalo kami and yung mga crowd din isa sa mga reasons, kumbaga sa energy namin,” said the Angeles City native.

“Sobrang saya kasi kahit papaano para makauwi sila na sasabihin nila na sulit yung nood.”

Despite the standout performance, Manansala echoed his coach’s philosophy that there is always more to learn and improve.

The former NCAA Juniors Basketball Rookie of the Year is determined not to become complacent despite NU’s lofty standing.

“Parang kulang pa eh kumbaga unti-unti lang atleast ngayong game nakuha ko kahit konti pero alam ko naman sa sarili ko na hindi ako magre-relax and mas ipupush ko pa yung sarili ko,” he said.
