Shaina Nitura thrilled for 2029 World Championship, but one step at a time

By: Nicole Gonzales

Shaina Nitura could hardly contain her excitement after learning that the Philippines will host the 2029 FIVB Women’s World Championship.

Yet, the 20-year-old standout from Adamson remains grounded, determined to focus on the journey ahead rather than getting swept up in the hype.

“Happy kasi mabibigyan kami ng big opportunity to play with [the] best of the best talaga na players and teams sa mundo,” Nitura said.

The announcement was made last Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena, before the Italy-Bulgaria match for the world championship, igniting anticipation among volleyball fans across the country.

Nitura capped her rookie collegiate season in UAAP Season 87 Women’s Volleyball with the Rookie of the Year award, finishing just behind three-time UAAP champion Bella Belen in the MVP race.

She has also made her mark on the national stage as one of the youngest members of the Alas Pilipinas Women roster for this national team season, sharing the court with seasoned players like Jia De Guzman, Dawn Catindig, and Eya Laure.

Despite the excitement, Nitura emphasizes the importance of growth and patience.

“Siguro, isa-isa lang. Mayroon pa kasi kaming prior na kailangan [paghandaan], kasi through that din naman over time ma-aachieve din namin yung kailangan naming ma-achieve or mag-improve kami,” she said.

Off the national team stage, Nitura continues to lead the Adamson Lady Falcons as team captain.

The Lady Falcons are making waves in the V-League, sweeping the Arellano University Lady Chiefs in the best-of-three semi-final series on Wednesday.

Her stellar performance earned her the Player of the Game honors, scoring 25 points off 22 attacks, along with two aces and a block, cementing her status as one of the league’s brightest rising stars.

“Very grateful and happy din kasi nakuha namin yung panalo and somehow na-sweep din namin,” Nitura said.
