Rashawn McCarthy was a man on fire Friday evening, much to the benefit of the Columbian Dyip.
The athletic combo guard showed his wares from beyond the arc, drilling seven three-pointers en route to 25 points. His performance steered the Dyip to a 102-90 victory over the Blackwater Elite.
For McCarthy, he attributed his fine shooting to the extra work he has been putting in every practice.
“I’ve been coming early to practice, getting some extra reps just to find my rhythm,” said McCarthy, who also collected five rebounds, four steals, amd three assists in over 43 minutes.
But besides the work itself, McCarthy also credited the presence of import Khapri Alston.
A dominant force inside at 6-foot-3, 245 lbs., Alston attracts defenses, and that frees up his teammates. For McCarthy, they should be locked and loaded whenever the ball gets to them.
“Oh man, you can’t play him one-on-one [Khapri]. It frees up someone, and when we move the ball, someone is open, they gotta shoot that shot,” said the three-year pro out of SUNY-Westbury.
“I love what Khap’s doing. Even though he’s getting beat up, he’s still fighting. I appreciate all his effort.”
The victory meant plenty for the Dyip, since it propelled them back to the win column following the close 120-125 loss to KJ McDaniels and the TNT KaTropa last October 5.
They will next face the NLEX Road Warriors on October 16. And for McCarthy, the challenge is now for them to win since they haven’t scored back-to-back victories in a while.
“It’s good to get wins, but since I’ve been on this team, we haven’t gotten back-to-back wins. We’ve been really close [though]. I think next week is a challenge for us to achieve that goal,” he said.
“We just gotta lock in, see the game plan that coach got, and be ready to execute.”
