The Philippine women’s cricket team has secured the country’s first medal in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games with a narrow 45-44 win over host Cambodia in their group phase meeting in the women’s T10 event on Saturday at the AZ Group Cricket Oval in Phnom Penh.
The Blue Caps will face the winner of the other group, which includes Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore, for the gold medal on Tuesday at 12 nn (11 a.m., Philippines time).
The host team set the bar with 44 runs in 10 overs, with Pen Samon contributing 14 runs during her turn at batting, but the Philippines eventually overcame the deficit.
April Rose Saquilon led the Philippines with 14 runs in the comeback attempt, with Romela Bautista Osabel adding eight runs.
This is the first time the Philippines joined the SEA Games’ cricket tournament.
Back in 2011, the sport was a demo event in Jakarta.
It was brought back as a regular event by Kuala Lumpur in 2017 but the Philippines did not take part in it.
