Southeast Asian Games gold No. 7 was not meant to be for Kim Mangrobang
The 31-year-old endurance racer out of Manila was pushed out of her throne by French-Cambodian Margot Garabedian on Monday in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Mangrobang was gunning for fourth straight title in SEAG triathlon, winning in Putrajaya in 2017, Clark in 2019 for both mixed relay and individual, and last year in Vietnam.
However, Cambodia brought out a big gun in world no. 192 Garabedian.
Garabedian, 27, was born and raised in Grenoble and had been representing France until December of last year.
She was given a Cambodian passport last March.
The Frenchman clocked a time of one hour, five minutes, and 34 seconds, breaking away from the pack in the swim.
Still, Mangrobang did her best to close the gap but only managed to finish with a time of one hour, seven minutes, and 24 seconds.
This ends Mangrobang’s campaign in Cambodia after winning aquathlon gold yesterday. Garabedian took gold in duathlon.
Singapore’s Louisa Middleditch closed out the podium with a time of 1:07:30.
