“Super” Sage Northcutt is excited to return to action after being on the shelf for four years.
Northcutt takes on Ahmed “Wolverine” Mujtaba in a three-round lightweight bout at ONE Fight Night 10: Johnson vs. Moraes III on 6 May in ONE Championship’s debut on U.S. soil at the 1stBank Center in Broomfield, Colorado.
When he enters the ONE Circle this May, expect Northcutt to make up for lost time. The karate prodigy came into The Home of Martial Arts riding a three-fight winning streak and owning an 11-2 record, but he found out quickly just how tough the competition in the organization is.
Northcutt was knocked out seconds into his debut, as Cosmo Alexander blasted him with a solid right that fractured eight different parts of his face and had him in surgery for nearly nine hours.
From that injury and COVID-19 restrictions, Northcutt found himself on the sidelines for far too long, but now he’s pumped for his return – especially since it’s happening in the U.S.
“Oh man, I’ll tell you what, it feels so good to be back. It’s been a while. I’ve been itching to get back,” he said. “Not only that, getting the fight in the United States, the first U.S. card for ONE Championship, I couldn’t be more excited for that.
“You have an incredible fighter, Demetrious Johnson, headlining the card, so the card’s gonna be super exciting, especially for the first card in the U.S. I’m so excited.”
While “Super” has been out for quite some time, a lot of people seem to have forgotten that Northcutt is still young and has his entire future ahead of him.
In just his mid-20s, Northcutt has all the time in the world to shape up and recover from his devastating loss.
“Being 26 years old right now, I’m still extremely young, so I’m looking forward to a long and successful career. I feel like I’m just getting started, and I’m still so young that I can have a lot of fights,” he said.
He also assures fans that he won’t lack in skills due to his time away, as he has stayed in shape throughout his hiatus.
“A lot of people will be thinking, ‘Hey, Sage might have some ring rust.’ It’s been three-and-a-half years. It’s a little bit of time. But I’ve been training, I’ve been staying sharp,” he said.
“I feel like I’ve improved in a lot of different areas. I’m looking forward to showing it.”
