Roger Pogoy suffered an apparent back injury late in the KaTropa’s 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup quarterfinal match versus the sixth-seeded Magnolia Hotshots, Monday evening.
The 3-and-D specialist said that he felt the pain in his lower back while helping defend Ian Sangalang at the post, which led to a 24-second shot clock violation with 57.8 seconds left to play.
Pogoy had actually dived for the missed shot by Jayson Castro moments prior to helping TNT force the turnover. That incident might have also played a factor why he was not able to finish the match.
“Biglang sumakit eh. Nung una nung nag-dive ako, tapos ‘yung supalpalin ko sana si Sangalang or kukuha ako ng rebound, biglang sumakit,” recalled Pogoy, who left with eight points and seven boards.
Asked if he could rate the pain from a scale of one to 10, Pogoy said: “Kanina talaga mga eight eh, ganun. Seven, eight.
“Pero nung uminom ako ng gamot, medyo nawala naman.”
Still, Pogoy remained on the bench to watch the Texters complete the comeback from as much as 18 points with a 98-97 victory to make it to the semifinals of the season-ending meet.
The Far Eastern University product then headed straight to the hospital to have his back checked.
Asked if this injury will affect his stint with Gilas Pilipinas in the 30th Southeast Asian Games, set to begin this weekend, Pogoy said that it will all depend on what the findings will be.
“Tignan na lang natin kung ano ‘yung result. Kasi ngayon ‘di ko pa malaman,” said the third-year guard.
