Despite his struggles, Dwight Ramos and Toyama stayed alive in the 97th Emperor’s Cup after escaping Shimane, 81-77, Sunday at the Hokkai Kitayell in Hokkaido.
The Grouses were leading by seven with less than three minutes left. Then Susanoo Magic churned 7-2 spurt to cut the lead to two, 79-77. Nyike Williams pumped the rally, while Nick Kay’s three with 46 ticks left gave life to Shimane.
Former TNT import Joshua Smith, though, made sure that their hard work will not be erased. He grabbed a huge offensive rebound late while sealing the deal with two big free throws.
With the win, the Grouses advanced to the next stage of the All-Japan Championship as they await the winner of the Hokkaido-Ibaraki game. The game takes place tomorrow at 6:00 PM (Manila time).
Smith had his best game so far this year, dropping 35 points and grabbing 19 rebounds.
Julian Mavunga scattered 21 points, 12 assists, and six rebounds as Ramos went just 1-of-7 from the field for three points with two assists and two blocks.
Reid Travis led Shimane with 18 points built on four treys and nine rebounds. Seiya Ando added 12 points and six assists.
