Quezon put a dent on Taguig’s once spotless record with a 119-108 double-overtime victory, Saturday evening in the 2021 Chooks-to-Go NBL Chairman’s Cup at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center in San Fernando, Pampanga.
The Barons opened the second overtime with a huge 10-2 blast to pull away, 107-99, with 2:53 left.
A three-pointer by Domenick Vera proved to be the exclamation point as Quezon went up by 10, 115-105, with 51 ticks remaining in the match.
Mar Villahermosa converted the game-tying layup for the Generals in the first overtime with 7.7 seconds remaining. Then Baron Topeng Lagrama’s attempt on the other end fell short.
Quezon got lucky in the payoff period as Alex Ramos was fouled with 22.9 seconds to go.
He calmly made the first one but missed the second that could have tied the ballgame. However, there was a lane violation called on the Generals, giving Ramos one more shot. He drained it to knot the game and send the game to extra period.
Lagrama, who played 50 minutes, carried the Barons with 26 points, 12 assists, five rebounds, and five steals. They also preserved their immaculate record at 4-0.’
Ramos backstopped him with 24 points, 16 rebounds, four blocks, and three steals. Meanwhile, Vera added 22 points, six assists, and five rebounds.
Arvine Calucin also nailed 16 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists for Quezon.
Villahermosa paced Taguig with 24 points, five assists, and three steals, but he committed six turnovers.
Jonathan Lontoc made 21 points while Mike Sampurna got 13 points, 14 rebounds, and seven assists.
LJ Mayo filled the stat sheet with 14 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, four steals, and three blocks.
The Generals slipped to 3-1.
Quezon aims for win no. 5 tomorrow against Bulacan DF at 1:15 PM. On the other hand, Taguig looks for vengeance against Muntinlupa the following game at 4:00 PM.
