PVL: Chery Tiggo extends winning streak to five, halts PLDT’s run for share of 2nd

Chery Tiggo’s winning streak extended to five games by halting PLDT’s five-game run in just three sets, 25-22, 25-16, 25-20, creating a four-way logjam for second place in the 2024 Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference on Tuesday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig.

Petro Gazz, Creamline, the High Speed Hitters, and the Crossovers are all tied for second with 7-2 records, respectively, using the points system and set ratio.

“Collective effort talaga kung paano kami nananalo. Lahat ginagawa nila ang kanilang trabaho. ‘Yan ang isa sa pinakamagandang nangyayari,” said Chery Tiggo head coach Kungfu Reyes.

Leading by just one point in the third set, the Crossovers didn’t even need to attack to create significant separation.

Their exquisite blocking and sharp serves – along with the High Speed Hitters’ errors – allowed them to open up a 20-13 lead.

Savannah Davison attempted to rally PLDT with three straight crosscourt kills to narrow the gap to five, 18-23.

However, Eya Laure and Ara Galang combined forces to secure the win for Chery Tiggo in one hour and 40 minutes.

The Laure sisters led the charge for the Crossovers, with Eya tallying 12 points and seven digs, while EJ contributed 10 points and six receptions.

“The team’s mindset is to win every point. Wag mamadaliin at mag-trabaho as a team kasi nga, iba ang nagagawa pagsama-sama,” said Eya.

Galang also chipped in with nine points in the victory.

Chery Tiggo will conclude the elimination round against Akari (April 20) and Galeries Tower (April 25).

Davison stood out as the lone bright spot for the High Speed Hitters with 22 points on 22-of-54 spikes. She also secured 10 receptions.

PLDT will still face semifinals hopefuls Cignal (April 20) and Creamline (April 25) in its remaining schedule.
