Pre, Payosing lead UP to Quintana Cup title win

Veejay Pre and James Payosing showcased their talent as University of the Philippines dominated Olivarez College, 88-70, to claim the PG Flex Invitational Tournament 2025 Quintana Cup on Monday, Nov. 24, at the Paco Arena in Manila.

Payosing, a 6-foot-2 forward from Bislig, Surigao del Sur, was at his best in the second quarter. He scored 11 of his team-high 20 points, including a buzzer-beating triple that capped the half with the Maroons holding a comfortable 46-34 lead.

The 6-foot-4 Pre was a force on the boards and a sharpshooter from midrange, making eight of nine attempts from the two-point area to finish with 19 points.

Although he fell just short of a double-double, his five assists — combined with the nine points shared by Player of the Game Payosing and Arvie Poyos — helped the Maroons pile on points and build a 23-point cushion (88-65) over the Sea Lions.

UP’s victory in the title-deciding game marked its ninth consecutive win since a default loss to Manila Central University in the season opener. The championship trophy was presented to the Maroons by PG Flex Linoleum executive Neil Guevarra.

Meanwhile, Letran edged Centro Escolar University, 75-70, to claim third place in UCAL’s preseason tournament, supported by sponsors including Smart Sports, Crane, Topflite, Hapee Toothpaste, Gerry’s Grill, Spalding, Mighty Bond, Best Options, Multimotors Auto Parts, Vital Water, and AZI.

Olivarez’s Hakim Njiasse put up a valiant effort with 27 points and 20 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough against UP’s efficient offense and relentless defense.

Pre, Payosing, Poyos, along with teammates Elliot Dimaculangan (14 points, 5 rebounds), Rain Maga (12 points), and even Russel Ogana (2 points), are aiming to earn spots on UP’s regular lineup for the UAAP.
