Little do many know that both the University Athletic Association of the Philippines and the National Collegiate Athletic Association of the Philippines share the same pool of referees for their respective tournaments this season.
Unlike past seasons, when each league had its own pool of officials, both now rely on the same referees to officiate all games across all divisions, five days a week.
That is why, for NCAA basketball commissioner Atty. Rico Quicho, it is particularly disheartening to see referees bearing the brunt of criticism.
“The integrity of game results is a shared responsibility. It is not carried solely by our referees and officiating crew. Each player and coach has the duty to honor the game and protect its credibility,” said Atty. Quicho, in a statement released ahead of Wednesday’s NCAA double-header at the Filoil Centre.
“Any conduct that casts doubt on the fairness of our competitions — whether through words, actions, or gestures — directly undermines the integrity of this league.”
In the NCAA, players, fans, and coaches sometimes make gestures or hurl expletives at referees when a call is perceived as “unfavorable.”
Meanwhile, UAAP coaches have often used the post-game podium to air their “concerns” over officiating. Ateneo’s Tab Baldwin and NU’s Jeff Napa did so last weekend, while Chris Gavina launched an expletive-laden tirade following UE’s overtime loss to La Salle last Wednesday.
For his part, Atty. Quicho emphasized that the NCAA will take a firm stance against such actions.
“Moving forward, any player, coach, team official, or spectator who engages in conduct that is inimical to the integrity of the league will be dealt with accordingly within the ambit of the Commissioner’s authority,” said Quicho.
“Let this serve as a firm reminder to all participants and stakeholders: we will protect the integrity of the NCAA without compromise. We encourage passion and intensity in competition, but these must always be matched by discipline, respect, and honor.”
