NCAA 99: Perpetual Jr Altas punch first Final Four Ticket in 14 years

University of Perpetual Help System DALTA took down the defending champions Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 94-88, to book their first Final Four ticket since 2010 at the NCAA Season 99 Juniors Basketball Tournament on Friday at the Filoil Ecooil Centre.

With today’s results, the Final Four lineup is officially locked in with Perpetual, Letran, San Sebastian, and Mapua each clinching their berths to the semifinals.

The Junior Altas managed to keep the Squires at bay despite a fourth-quarter comeback bid, as they secured their first semis appearance in nearly 14 years.

“I think of every game as our last, ‘di ko nga alam kung ano standing namin ngayon basta focus lang ako sa next games,” Perpetual head coach Joph Cleopas said.

Coming off a triple-double performance the last time out, Amiel Acido delivered another stellar performance with 27 points off 66-percent shooting while Mark Gojo Cruz chipped in 17 markers and eight rebounds.

Letran could not pull through despite Jonathan Manalili and Jovel Baliling dropping 21 points each.

Meanwhile, San Sebastian College forced a three-way tie for second as they stunned Mapua University in overtime, 90-84.

The Red Robins came back from down 16 at the start of the fourth quarter, outscoring the Staglets 34-18 behind Lawrence Mangubat and Sean Salvador who each dropped 21 points apiece.

However, San Sebastian’s defensive gambits limited Mapua to just one point in overtime as they improved to 6-2 to tie both the Red Robins and the Squires.

Kit Bonus paced the Staglets with 28 points off a 70-percent shooting clip while Rion Porcadas notched 16 markers and six caroms.

On the other hand, Lee Marin led JRU with 18 points and four rebounds as the Light Bombers officially snapped San Beda’s 12 consecutive years in the Final Four.

Until their elimination with today’s result, the Red Cubs held the record for the longest active streak of semifinal appearances.

Capping off the penultimate day of eliminations, La Salle Green Hills snatched the game from Lyceum of the Philippines University in dramatic fashion at the buzzer, 85-84.
