NCAA 98: Bravo takes over in OT as Lyceum escapes San Sebastian

John Bravo came alive in overtime for Lyceum of the Philippines University, lifting his side to an 82-79 victory over San Sebastian College-Recoletos in a Sunday afternoon thriller in the NCAA Season 98 Seniors Basketball Tournament at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.

Bravo was unconscious, knocking down all of the Pirates’ field goals in the extra period scoring seven of his 14 points in the said period.

With 58 seconds remaining, Bravo hit a wing triple to give Lyceum a one-point, 80-79 advantage.

Coming off a timeout, Romel Calahat tried his luck on the inside but was blocked by Enoch Valdez three times.

Mclaude Guadana split his free throws to get the two-point, 81-79 lead, before Reymart Escobido stepped out of bounds with 11-ticks left.

Valdez also split his charity stripe shots, to be within three, 82-79, right before Jessie Sumoda launched a three for one last chance but missed.

“Pagkastart talagang gigil sila kasi syempre they want to bounce back from their loss no. Pero yun nga sabi ko sa kanila hindi tayo mananalo kung mangigigil lang kayo,” said LPU head coach Gilbert Malabanan.

In the payoff period, Renzo Navarro hit a top-of-the-key three right at the 42-second mark to get the one-point lead, 73-72. Guadania missed his second free throw with 15-ticks left to tie that game at 73 and force overtime.

Bravo and Guadana scored 14 apiece, with the former shooting 71-percent from the field while finishing with six rebounds and an assist, while the latter added three boards, two dimes, two steals, and a block.
