With competitions suspended due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has decided to freeze the world rankings for players, teams, and federation, Monday evening.
This means that Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3×3 players Joshua Munzon (187,485 points) and Alvin Pasaol (124,986) will remain as the top two in the country. Dylan Ababou (91,011), Karl Dehesa (87,364), Troy Rike (69,152), Santi Santillan (67,525), Chris De Chavez (51,212), Franky Johnson (42,069), Gab Banal (29,881), and Roosevelt Adams (29,274) — all of whom also compete in the pioneering league — complete the top ten.
Pasig Chooks-to-Go, on the other hand, is currently the 27th best club team in the world.
The FIBA 3X3 World Player Rankings are based on the nine best performances over the last 12 months. The team rankings are used to grant privileged access to the professional FIBA circuit; on the other hand, the federation rankings are a key component for countries to qualify for national team competitions.
Competitions in 3×3 basketball traditionally start in April. However, because of the pandemic, FIBA and its affiliate leagues like Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3×3 have suspended competitions since March 13.
In the local scene, the Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3×3 President’s Cup, which was supposed to begin last March 29, has been postponed indefinitely. The women’s competition of the league, that has the Women’s National Basketball League as a partner, has also been suspended until further notice.
The Chooks-to-Go FIBA 3X3 World Tour Manila Masters, on the other hand, has been moved from May 2-3 to August 15-16, still at SM Megamall Fashion Hall.
With the suspension, the following shall be applied:
- All rankings are frozen as of April 1, 2020 until the suspension of competitions is lifted by FIBA or until any later date so communicated by FIBA.
- Ranking points will still be awarded for events taking place during this period but will only count towards the rankings – for the usual 12-month period – when rankings are unfrozen.
- The lifespan of the ranking points awarded for events that took place prior to the freeze will be extended by the duration of the freeze. However, this extension shall not exceed the date of October 1, 2021.
FIBA and Chooks-to-Go will continue to monitor the situation on a regular basis and will evaluate the options for the continuation or not of the respective competitions, when and if the situation allows.
