Mikey Williams joins Mighty Sports for Dubai tilt

Mikey Williams will return to Mighty Sports for the 2020 Dubai International Basketball Championship, which takes place from January 23-February 1, 2020 at the Shabab Al Ahli Club.

Williams’ presence in his arsenal is a welcome development for Mighty Sports head coach Charles Tiu. The 28-year-old, Filipino-American floor general was one of the standouts during the 2019 Jones Cup.

“Mikey is great,” said Tiu, whose squad is backed by Creative Pacific of Bong Cuevas, Go for Gold, Oriental Group, Discovery Primea, and Gatorade.

“Bias aside, I’d say he and Jason Brickman are two of the best point guards we have from the Philippines not in the PBA yet.

“He’s international level for sure. I trust him a lot,” added the youthful tactician.

During the Jones Cup, the 189-centimeter tall guard posted norms of 8.9 points, 3.5 assists, and 2.8 rebounds per game while knocking down a team-high 17 triples.

Williams went on to play with MPBL club team GenSan Warriors, but played only 12 games for reasons still unknown. He averaged 16.3 points, 6.3 assists, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game.

The native of Los Angeles will join Juan Gomez de Liaño as the lead guards of Mighty Sports.

“Definitely, with him and Juan as the guards we have a bumper crop of guards for our team this time around.”

Also part of the team are Javi Gomez de Liaño, Kai Sotto, Dave Ildefonso, Jamie Malonzo, and Andray Blatche. Serving as one of Tiu’s assistant coaches is Angola national team head coach Will Voigt.
